Abdominoplasty

Tummy tucks are performed to remove additional skin and fat from the middle and lower abdomen and to tighten the muscles of the abdominal wall.

During your initial consultation with the Plastic & Cosmetic Surgeon, Alan Bienstock, MD, you will be asked about the results you would like to achieve from the tummy tuck surgery. This will help determine whether realistic results can be achieved.

You may be a good candidate for a tummy tuck if you fall into one of the following categories:

You are a man or woman in good health bothered by fatty deposits and loose skin around your abdomen area.

You have an abdomen that protrudes and is out of proportion to the rest of your body.

You are a woman who has excessively stretched her abdominal muscles due to multiple pregnancies.

You have excess fatty tissue concentrated in the abdomen area.

You have sagging, loose skin on the abdomen or weakened abdominal muscles.

Frequently Asked Questions About Abdominoplasty

What is Abdominoplasty?
Abdominoplasty, also known as a "Tummy Tuck", is the surgery of the abdomen to remove the excess skin and fat that may accumulate after pregnancy, obesity or age. With a full abdominoplasty, benefits are also tightening of the abdominal muscles that may have become stretched out or lax over time.

Will Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck) surgery tighten up loose skin?
Yes, that is one of the main reasons patients elect the procedure.

When is Abdominoplasty usually performed?

The Abdominoplasty procedure is usually performed when a person is dissatisfied with their appearance in the abdomen region. Although there is no "normal" age or time in one's life (after 18), it is most often sought out after a woman has given birth and does not plan on having any more children. Mini tummy tucks are considered less invasive and are for minimal correction cases.

Where will my Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) surgery take place?

The tummy tuck surgery may take place in either the surgeon's state of the art surgical facility or a local hospital.

How long does the procedure take?

A complete tummy tummy tuck surgery normally takes between 2 and 5 hours depending on the particular procedures being performed. A partial tummy tuck, on average, lasts between 1 and 2 hours.

What types of anesthesia are used?
You and your surgeon, Dr. Alan Bienstock will decide on the type of anesthesia to be used in the surgery. A general anesthesia may be used in order to allow you to sleep through the operation. The second option is a local anesthesia which will allow you to stay awake for the duration of the procedure, combined with a sedative to keep you relaxed.
