Body
Contouring (Body Reshaping / Liposculpture)
Body contouring (Body Reshaping / Liposculpture) procedures were among
the top plastic surgery procedures performed in the United States this
year. Following large weight loss, including that achieved by diet,
exercise, gastric bypass, or gastric banding, a patient usually has
significant areas of excess skin. This normally includes excess skin of
the abdomen, breasts, arms, and thighs. Plastic surgeons address these
problems with many different potential options, including abdominoplasty
(tummy tuck), breast augmentation or breast reduction, medial thigh lift,
and lower body lift. These patients may also be candidates for other
procedures including liposuction. Your plastic surgeon can discuss with
you the various surgical options to optimize your appearance following
weight loss.
Body Sculpting (Body Reshaping / Liposculpture)Techniques
Plastic surgeons make use of a variety of body sculpting techniques to
help their patients achieve a lean, toned figure:
Liposuction is the most popular
method of body contouring surgery because it allows the plastic surgeon
to resculpt specific areas of the body through the removal of fat from
beneath the skin, using only a few tiny incisions. There are many
different methods of liposuction available, which allows the plastic
surgeon to select the method that will be most effective in helping you
to achieve your goals.
Body
Lift procedures allow plastic surgeons to remove excess skin and fat from many
areas of the body to resculpt the figure. Extensive total body lifts and
lower body lifts can accomplish a dramatic transformation, while
procedures such as arm lift, thigh lift, and buttock lift concentrate on
improving the appearance of a specific area of the body.
“Tummy tuck,” or abdominoplasty,
is a unique body sculpting surgery because it combines removal of excess
skin and fat from the midsection with the surgical tightening of the
abdominal muscles. Abdominoplasty is also performed during full body
lift surgery.
Good candidates for body contouring surgery are individuals that are in
good overall health, have good skin elasticity and skin thickness, and
have reasonable expectations for the outcome of their surgery. Some body
sculpting techniques, such as total body lift, involve more intensive
surgical procedures than others. In such cases, candidates may have to
meet additional health requirements before they can proceed with
surgery.
